Toothed pulleys

Timing pulleys transfer rotary motion through a matching timing belt. Their tooth counts determine the speed ratio between the motor and driven shaft. Compare tooth profile, tooth count, belt width and shaft bore to choose a suitable pulley for CNC machines, 3D printers and other motion systems.

How to choose a timing pulley

Tooth profile and pitch

Match both pulleys to the belt. Profiles with similar dimensions are not necessarily interchangeable.

Number of teeth

With the same driving pulley, a larger driven pulley reduces output speed and a smaller one increases it. Check the actual ratio before choosing the pair.

Belt width and flanges

Check the working width and the belt guidance required by your layout.

Shaft connection

Verify the bore diameter, hub dimensions and fixing method against your shaft and installation space.

Calculate the pulley ratio from motor speed

For a two-pulley synchronous drive, output speed equals motor speed multiplied by the driving pulley tooth count and divided by the driven pulley tooth count. A 20-tooth driving pulley and a 60-tooth driven pulley convert 1,500 rpm into 500 rpm: a 3:1 reduction.

Several pulley pairs can provide the same ratio. Before ordering, check product specifications, belt compatibility, centre distance, belt length and the manufacturer’s load and speed limits.
